SASSA ‘Awaiting Identity Verification’

The South African Social Security Agency verifies applications by identifying the provided information to confirm who you are and that what you have provided is true. During the process, your application details are checked with your official record at the Department of Home Affairs. This step ensures that there is no crime or fraud committed, and financial support is received by the eligible citizens

Why Identity Verification Fails?

This issue happens when you provided to SASSA is not the same as in the record of the DHA. There can be various reasons for this error.

  • Mismatched Personal Details: There might be a different name, surname, or ID number on the application and on your official ID.
  • Outdated Information: Your information with the DHA is outdated, which can be due to a name change or other personal status changes.
  • ID Book vs. Smart Card: There can be issues in the system’s ability due to having an old green ID book.
  • Typos: small errors can cause serious issues, such as a misspelled name or an incorrect digit in your ID number can result in identification failure.

How to Fix a Failed Identity Check

If you are facing this issue, you must take action immediately to resolve this. Failure to do so can result in grant suspension.

  • Check Your Details: First of all, ensure that your entered  ID number and name on your application are 100% correct.
  • Lodge an Appeal: To review your case, you must appeal a declined application. This action will be handled by the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals. To submit the appeal, you must have documents that prove your identity and address the reason for the decline.
  • Biometric Verification: You need to do biometric verification via fingerprint or facial recognition checks, which is essential in SASSA Status Check. This action is done via the SASSA office or a partner retail outlet, and it’s essential to unlock your account.
  • Contact Home Affairs: Even after correction, if the verification fails, then your information may be incorrect at the DHA. You should visit the DHA office and confirm your records are updated and correct.

Incorrect or Pending Banking Details

Solution: On the status, you will find  “Declined” with a specific reason like “Alternative Income Source Identified.” You can appeal this decision if you think the official assessment is incorrect.

SRD “Alternative Income Source Identified”

This means SRD has noticed an income flagger that makes you ineligible for the grant. This alternative income source can be.

  • A private pension.
  • Business profits.
  • Other grants.
  • Maintenance payments.
  • Funds received from family members.

How it works

SASSA cross-references your ID number with various databases, including:

  • South African Revenue Service: To check for formal employment income.
  • Unemployment Insurance Fund: To see if you are receiving unemployment benefits.
  • National Student Financial Aid Scheme: To check for student stipends.
  • Banks: To check for a monthly income above the set threshold, which is currently R620.
  • The threshold: If any of these systems show a monthly income above R620, your application will be declined for that month.

What to do

  • Check your status every month: Each month, SRD performs a new check. So you must check your status every month.
  • Appeal the decision: if you confirm that the “Income Source Identified” status is an error, then you can appeal on the official website of SASSA Status Check.
